Peppone (actually an enlarged form : "large Sepp"), like the original diminutive Peppino , is often used in Italy as a nickname for Giuseppe ( Josef ). During the 1950s in Italy Josef Stalin was simply called "Peppone".

The Austrian-Bavarian Pepi and in Switzerland Beppi are derived according to the same pattern .

Peppone is also a character in Giovanni Guareschi's stories about Don Camillo and Peppone .
