Perelandra trilogy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Perelandra Trilogy is a trilogy of three cosmic novels by the Irish author Clive Staples Lewis (CS Lewis). It's fiction without science. Lewis tries to expand the earthly horizon to include the cosmic one. In English it is called Space Trilogy , Cosmic Trilogy or Ransom Trilogy .

It is reported that Lewis wrote the first volume in the series, Out of the Silent Planet , after discussions with fellow writer JRR Tolkien about the state of fiction in novels. Tolkien's draft of a science fiction novel entitled The Lost Road , however, was not completed. A draft was included in volume five of the The History of Middle earth series and motifs are said to have flowed into Tolkien's also unfinished work The Notion Club Papers .

The three volumes of the trilogy are:

  • Out of the Silent Planet (1938, German Beyond the Silent Star , first German edition as The Silent Planet ). The action takes place largely on Mars .
  • Perelandra (1943), also published as Voyage to Venus (Eng. Perelandra ). The action takes place largely on Venus
  • That Hideous Strength (1945, dt. The evil force ). In 1958, Avon published a version of the book shortened by a third under the title The Tortured Planet . The action takes place on earth.

Ransom

The fictional philologist Elwin Ransom is the main character in the first two volumes and an important character in the third volume. Ransom has certain similarities to the author CS Lewis: He is a university professor, an expert in languages and medieval literature, unmarried (Lewis did not get married until he was 55) and has only one living relative.
