history

School at Weißwasser (oldest pictorial representation of the village Weißwasser).

On January 24th, 1772 the first school was founded in Weißwasser. 24 children were taught in a house (today Gasthaus Zur Friedenseiche ) by their first teacher, Georg Beck. In 1817 the first civil servant teacher began his service in the school in Weißwasser. Classes lasted until 1868. In 1867 a school building was built on the current school site, which included two classrooms as well as the apartment of the cantor and the later second teacher. With the increase in the number of school-age children, further school buildings were built in the district at the train station and the building in the old village was expanded in 1901 and an apartment was created for the headmaster and the fourth teacher. 200 children could be taught in four classrooms. The growing population of the city of Weißwasser soon made it necessary to build a new school. Heinrich Kühlmann, the headmaster at the time, campaigned for the new school building in Weißwasser in 1912.

On November 6, 1912, the community school 1 in Alt-Weißwasser was inaugurated. The school had cost around 150,000 marks to build . 750 children in 14 classes could now be taught by 12 teachers. The school became a symbol of the city and the region.

After the reunification , the school was renovated and reconstructed for over 4.9 million DM . On October 28, 1992, after extensive modernization and an extension for the current 1st elementary school, it was given the name Pestalozzi School . Since the population in Weißwasser had fallen by more than half in 2002, Weißwasser only needed two schools instead of three. The 1st middle school was closed in 2005 and the 1st elementary school stayed in the annex. In 2009, the city council decided to build a new gym on the site and to renovate the school. Since the school year 2010, the Pestalozzi primary school in Weißwasser has been located in the entire building complex.

There is also a nursery that children from first to fourth grade cared for in different groups.
