Petrie Cast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Petrie Cast (spreading plaster ) is used to describe a plaster cast for the treatment of Perthes' disease .

The bandage covers both thighs and lower legs of the patient, the knees are extended. The hip joints actually affected remain free. The feet are occasionally involved. Both legs are widely spread and fixed in this position with a bar on both lower legs. Patients are able to lie down and sit. Standing is also possible (if medically permitted) and walking is possible with the help of crutches .

There are also orthoses that are designed according to this pattern.

This petriecast is mainly used in the USA and England. An alternative treatment method is the Thomas splint .
