Path (computer graphic)

A path describes a vector line or curve that is created in a vector-based graphics and drawing program using a drawing tool. The path always consists of at least two anchor points. A connection of these anchor points results in the path. It is a sequence of straight lines and / or Bézier curves that are delimited by anchor points. A path can be marked by end points or it can be a self-contained line.

A path can be either open or closed. Open paths have a start point that does not match the end point - e.g. B. a straight line. A closed path describes a continuous line without a defined start and end point - e.g. B. a circle. Paths can also be used to draw other geometric shapes: polygons, ellipses, and star shapes.

Paths can have different filling and contour properties. Colors or gradients can fill the inner area of ​​a path. The contour can also take on a thickness or color.

Anchor points

There are two types of anchor points: transition or curve points and corner points. Curve points have two interconnected handles that both react when moved. Corner points have either no, one or two handles, these are not connected to each other. At this point a path changes direction abruptly. When creating a path, corner points and curve points can be combined with one another.

Direction lines and grip points

When editing an anchor point, directional handles are displayed at the points of the connection segments. The handles consist of direction lines that end in direction points. The length and angle of the lines determine the size and shape of the curve segments. The shape of a path can be changed using the handles. The angle and length of the direction line determine the shape of the path.

Applications

In graphics programs, paths can be created using path tools such as the freehand, calligraphy or curve tool.
