Phantasmagoria is a horror novel by the American author Steve Whitton, based on the Sierra computer game Phantasmagoria by Roberta Williams .

action

Successful mystery novelist Adrienne Delaney and her husband Don recently bought a secluded mansion off the coast of a small island in New England that once belonged to a famous magician. This magician had five wives, all of whom died under mysterious circumstances.

Hoping to find inspiration for her next novel, Adrienne soon experiences bad nightmares. She begins to explore the property and comes across scary things. In the process, she accidentally opens a magical box and frees an evil demon who takes possession of Don. As a result, her husband becomes extremely angry and aggressive and rapes Adrienne.

Against all logic, Adrienne stays in the house with Don, who is behaving increasingly insane. In a barn behind the property, she discovers a vagabond and her son who have quartered there together. Adrienne allows them to stay. The tramp holds a seance through which Adrienne learns that the unleashed demon must be banished again. In the nearby village she meets an old man who, as a boy, was once an apprentice to the magician. Through him she learns about a ritual with which the demon can be defeated.

The next day Adrienne is attacked again by Don, who has since become completely unpredictable. At first she manages to escape from him, but shortly afterwards she comes under his control again. She is tied up by him on a torture machine , which was once built for a magic escape trick. At the last moment Adrienne manages to free herself. Don dies. The demon leaves his body and pursues Adrienne through the house in the form of a huge monster. Adrienne wins the lead and at the last second can perform the ritual that defeats the demon. She leaves the house exhausted and distraught.
