Phantom feeling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phantom feelings or phantom sensations are feelings that one has in extremities that are no longer accessible through the nervous system. They can therefore occur after amputations, paralysis or after a stroke. One form of phantom feelings is phantom pain , which is felt to be uncomfortable.

root cause

It has long been known that phantom feelings result from brain effort to cope with the inaccessibility of large areas of the nerve. The processing of these signals throughout the body takes place in the so-called somatosensory areas of the brain , which include the thalamus and the brain stem . It was also possible to prove that the cause of phantom feelings is the creation of new brain connections.
