Phex is a peer-to-peer - file sharing client for the Gnutella network. It's free software and without any spyware or adware. Phex is released under the GNU General Public License .

Phex is based on Java technology and is therefore available on many different systems that offer a J2SE 1.4 runtime environment. These include Windows , macOS , Linux and various other Unix systems.

Phex supports downloads by means of "swarming" , which means that parts of the file can be downloaded by different peers at the same time. This speeds up the charging process significantly. In addition, rarer file parts are preferred by default. For advanced users, Phex offers a high degree of control through many configuration options.

Phex also offers file sharing in closed groups - so-called private file sharing.

history

In April 2001 Konrad Haenel split off the outdated Gnutella client Furi and renamed it Phex. After Konrad Haenel was involved in the Phex project until the end of 2001, he left the project. Gregor K. continues the development to this day.

Anonymous Phex is I2Phex

Since 2006 there has also been an I2Phex variant of the client that enables anonymous file exchange by routing the Gnutella protocol over the I2P network. Base-64 keys are used to protect the IP address. The aim is to integrate the code for the I2P network in one of the upcoming versions of Phex so that the client can transfer I2P files both with IP addresses and via the layer network.
