architecture

The ensemble consists of the Philippuskirche and the Nikolauskirche, directly attached to the north. A common bell tower is built in front to the west.

history

A wooden church was mentioned for 1194. In 1383 a stone Philip church was built in its place, with a small chapel to the north. In 1527 two new two-story churches were built there, which were used by two different parishes, one by Novgorod boyars and the other by the local population. In 1608 the communities were merged. In 1659/60 the Nikolauskirche was expanded to three floors. In the 18th century it was reduced to two floors and downgraded to a chapel, and in 1898 it was demolished.

After 1945, the Church of Philip was the only church in Novgorod that was used for a few decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, architectural and archaeological investigations took place on the site. From 1977 to 1978, after many years of effort, the Nikolauskirche was reconstructed in the historical style. Today the churches are used by a Russian Orthodox parish.
