The Piaggio P.50 was a heavy bomber made by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio .

History and construction

The Piaggio P.50 was developed as a heavy bomber for the Regia Aeronautica , but did not get beyond the prototype stage. It was the first construction by Giovanni Casiraghi and was based on the designs of the Piaggio designer Giovanni Pegna .

The first model P.50-I was a four-engined shoulder-wing aircraft with a conventional tail unit. The aircraft had four engines, which were arranged in pairs in two engine nacelles, one behind the other and each driving a pull and a push propeller. Each of the four Isotta-Fraschini Asso XI.RC V12 piston engines achieved an output of 544 kW. Three armaments were planned for defense. Piaggio built two prototypes, the first of which flew in 1937 and the second in 1938.

The newer variant P.50-II flew for the first time in 1938. The machine was equipped with four Piaggio P.XI-RC.40 radial engines, each with 746 kW, which, dispensing with the tandem motor pods of the P.50-I, were in four normal motor pods were housed and propelled pull propellers. Six 12.7 millimeter machine guns were available for defense. Only a prototype of the P.50-II was built.

No P.50 was ordered, but the development results could be incorporated into the construction of the Piaggio P.108 .
