content

In spades travels to America is about a squirrel called Pik and its owner, living with his aunt not well-heeled boys Ben. When Pik is stolen by Ben's friend Terry, a child from a wealthy family, and taken on a cruise to America, Ben follows him as a stowaway on the ocean liner, but is discovered and forced to do kitchen work on the cruiser. Ben experiences further humiliations. But finally, a friendly relationship develops with the supercargo Wöhler and Ben's goal to get back spades is within reach.

effect

The book has not been reprinted since 1959. Nevertheless, Pik travels to America was one of the books that inspired Wolfgang Herrndorf to write his best-selling novel Tschick around 2004 . The book is also mentioned in Herrndorf's debut novel In Plüschgewittern as the protagonist's absolute favorite book, which perfectly reflects his attitude towards life as a child.
