The Pioneer Heights (also called Pioneer Hills) are an area in the northeast of the Heritage Range , the southern part of the Ellsworth Mountains in West Antarctica . They cover a large area with hills, mountains, ridges and peaks east of the Schneider and Schanz glaciers , bounded by the Splettstoesser glacier in the north and the Union glacier in the south.
Pioneer Heights include the Nimbus Hills , Gross Hills , Buchanan Hills , Collier Hills and Inferno Ridge .
The Pioneer Heights were mapped by the United States Geological Survey as part of the mapping of the Ellsworth Mountains in 1961-66 through field surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy . The American Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names , like various other parts of the Heritage Range, gave them a name that is related to the cultural heritage of the United States .
