Plan Director (Montevideo)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Plan Director de Montevideo was an urban development plan for the Uruguayan capital Montevideo , which became legally effective in 1956.

The Plan Director replaced the Plan Regulador from 1930, which included the creation of a new city center and which could not be implemented due to its immense cost. In contrast, the new urban development plan took into account the financial expenses of the restructuring measures that were disregarded in the Regulador plan . In the first planning step, the urban area was divided into various zones. Separate plans were then drawn up for these individual zones, such as the Plan de Remodelación Integral for the old town from 1957. Among other things, the plan director intended to build high-rise buildings in the central old town area with retail outlets on the ground floor. In addition, two large rental blocks were to be created in the peripheral areas. The second planning step dealt with traffic-related planning.

The core of the Plan Director was the establishment of three centers with different functions. These were the Centro Histórico as the cultural center as well as the Centro Bancario and the Centro Portuario .
