After several small meetings, the platform 20,000 women was finally formed as an open working group in September 2010, with the aim of organizing the women's demonstration on Vienna's Ringstrasse on March 19, 2011. From then on, activists of the platform met at regular intervals at different locations in Vienna.

On March 19, 1911, the first large demonstration for women's rights in Austria took place on the Ringstrasse in Vienna , in which around 20,000 women and men took part. At that time, among other things, the right to vote for women, the eight-hour working day, the legalization of abortion and equal wages for equal work were called for. The name “Platform 20,000 women” refers to this event; the aim was also to be able to win over 20,000 women or people for the demonstration for the 100th International Women's Day on March 19, 2011. In addition, the motto “AUS! Action implementation. Immediately "selected.

Women's demonstration on March 19, 2011

In the run-up to the demonstration, there was broad mobilization in the environment of feminist and women's political organizations. Among other things, organizations as well as individuals were called upon to send their three most important women's political demands to the platform; these were published on the website of the 20,000 women. At the same time, flash mobs and press conferences were held in Vienna to draw attention to the demonstration. The aim was as broad an alliance as possible, with only right-wing organizations and parties being excluded. After the ÖVP women had also sent in their demands and these were published, there was criticism from some feminist initiatives that did not express their solidarity with the platform. March 19 was chosen for the demonstration in memory of 1911, but on March 8, 2011 the traditional, autonomously organized demonstration on International Women's Day took place in Vienna. As a joint statement by the platform, a vision text was published under the title “Women, together we will change the world and ourselves!”, In which, among other things, a life free of violence, racism and sexism is demanded. The demonstration on March 19, 2011 finally started with a rally on Vienna's Schwarzenbergplatz, the demonstration then moved over the Ringstrasse towards Parliament. Finally, a closing rally took place at the parliament from 4 p.m., at which various musicians also performed. According to the organizers, around 15,000 people took part in the demonstration, the police said there were 5,000 participants.
