The Plaza de Cibeles is one of busy square in Madrid , Spain , at the intersection of Calle Alcalá , Paseo de Recoletos and Paseo del Prado . It is a postcard-like square for the Spanish capital.

In the middle of the square is the famous Fuente de Cibeles fountain . It is dedicated to the Greek goddess Cybele , who stands for the earth, agriculture and fertility. The goddess sits on a chariot pulled by lions. The fountain was built in 1782. The sculptors Francisco Gutiérrez (for the figure of God and the chariot) and Roberto Michel (for the lions) as well as the decorative painter Miguel Ximénez (for the overall decoration) were responsible for this.

Real Madrid celebrates its triumphs in the Plaza de Cibeles , such as B. winning the league or the Champions League.

The current square was initially called Plaza de Madrid, until it was renamed Plaza de Castelar around 1900. On the four sides of the square are famous buildings such as the Palacio de Buenavista (the headquarters of the army), the Palacio de Linares and the Palacio de Comunicaciones , the former main post office, which has been the seat of the city administration of Madrid since the end of 2007 and in 2011 in Palacio de Cibeles was renamed.
