Pless (carnival figure)

The Pless is a character who irregularly in the carnival of the city of Bad Aussee in Styria , on Shrove Tuesday, occurs. It symbolizes winter. Her costume consists of old padded clothes and a beehive that is worn on her head. The Pless has a pole in its hand, to which a rag is attached, which is mainly used to beat female spectators and children during the carnival procession . The children try to chase away the Pless and thus the winter with snowballs with loud “Pless, Pless” shouts.
