The Norwegian Police Security Service , PST (security police), the domestic intelligence service in Norway .

Its structure is comparable to the British MI5 (Security Service). The service was long known as POT (Politiets overvåkningstjeneste or Police Surveillance Agency); However, on June 2, 2001, the Norwegian parliament changed the name to today's Politiets sikkerhetstjeneste.

history

The service was established in 1936 or 1937. He was initially responsible for the internal security of Norway. Well known today are the departments for counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, organized crime, extremism, investigation department, technical service, analysis and foreigner surveillance. The service is also responsible for the personal protection of all potentially vulnerable politicians inside and outside Norway. The royal family has its own security service.

PST is not part of the National Police Directorate (Politidirektoratet, POD), but reports directly to the Ministry of Justice and the Police. Having used illegal methods during the Cold War, the service is now monitored by a commission from the Norwegian Parliament .
