Polish Senate (Second Republic)

The Senate was in the Second Republic from 1922 to 1939 a chamber of the Polish Parliament, based in Warsaw .

On March 17, 1921, the Constitution of the Second Republic was passed. From 1922 the constitution provided for a bicameral parliament. The Sejm existed alongside the Senate .

The Senate consisted of 111 members from 1922 to 1935 and 96 members from 1935 to 1939. Men and women with a minimum age of 40 years were eligible. The legal basis was the law of July 28, 1922 on the election regulations for the Senate and the election regulations of July 8, 1935. By 1935, 93 members of parliament were elected in 17 constituencies (which corresponded to the voivodships ) with 3 to 9 seats each. Another 18 MPs were elected via state lists. Between 1935 and 1939, 64 senators were elected in the constituencies and 32 were appointed by the state president. The elections took place one week after the Sejm elections.

With the occupation of Poland by Germany and the Soviet Union, the history of the Senate of the Second Republic also ended.
