Porta della Vittoria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Porta della Vittoria (Gate of Victory) was a city gate to medieval Palermo near what is now Via Lincoln.

The gate was of Arab origin and was part of the Arab city walls of Palermo. The Normans conquered Palermo through this gate . To commemorate the victory, Roger I had the gate integrated into a chapel dedicated to Our Lady.

In 1542 the Oratorio dei Bianchi was built over the old Maria della Vittoria (Maria of Victory) chapel. The existence of the gate was forgotten. Only in 1866 did Michele Amari rediscover the remains of the gate behind a stone altar.
