history

Former Reichsposthauptamt number 1

The post gate was originally part of the German contribution to the world exhibition in Chicago in 1893. It was the right three portals through which one got there to the German pavilion. They were made by the art forge of the Armbrüster brothers in Frankfurt (Main). The imposing dimensions of the gate group were 32 m in width and up to 11 m in height. After the end of the world exhibition, the portal was initially not used until Kaiser Wilhelm II bought it. He had the large central gate installed at the obelisk entrance in 1896 , which was eventually scrapped in 1931. The two side portals were set up on both sides of the linden avenue. They established the connection between the Reichsposthauptamt number 1 and the New Palais, where the emperor resided in the summer. The opposite counterpart, which was still on the left in Chicago, is also called the Lindstedter Tor .

At the end of the war in 1945, a Soviet tank rammed the post gate, whereupon it was poorly repaired and welded in the process. In 1997 it was dismantled and stored by the Castle Foundation. In the following years, extensive restoration was carried out in the metal workshop of the Schirrhof. The gate was returned to its intended use for the 2009 Castle Night.

The Lindstedter Tor is located at the opposite, north-westerly entrance of the castle park. In 2010, the restoration work began on this gate, which could then be reopened for the Palace Night 2012.
