Schematic representation of a potentometer

A potentometer is a device that can be used to measure how much water a plant shoot consumes per unit of time. For this purpose, a system that is closed off from the outside and filled with water is produced into which the plant stem is inserted airtight . The only air access is a thin, horizontal glass tube through which air is drawn to compensate for the water consumption of the plant . The level of water in the tube shows how much water has been used. The device is suitable for determining the transpiration of plant sprouts over a short period of a few minutes to hours, for example in different outdoor conditions.
