Press command

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Presskomandos were groups of military recruiters who were sent out to recruit men capable of weapons. Presskomandos emerged mainly from the 17th century, when many European countries built standing armies and thus replaced the mercenary system of the Middle Ages . The members of the press commandos tried to recruit men fit for arms by false promises or by force for service in the respective armies.

The use of press commands was particularly well known in the context of the soldier trade under Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Kassel , but was also often practiced by other feudal rulers .
