Problem solving training

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The problem-solving training by D'Zurilla and Goldfried is one of the standard intervention techniques in cognitive behavioral therapy. It is about acquiring adequate strategies and options for action to solve a problem more quickly and effectively. It has a strong didactic structure.

Problem solving steps

According to D'Zurillia and Goldfried (1971), the following 5 problem-solving steps can be formalized:

  1. General problem orientation
  2. Describe the problem
  3. Creating alternatives
  4. Making a decision
  5. Application and review

First of all, a detailed exploration is carried out to identify and precisely define the problem. Afterwards, ideas on alternative coping options are collected by means of brainstorming . It is important that all ideas are permissible and that none of them may be devalued in advance. If you have now worked out a list of coping options, all options are discussed and evaluated with regard to their consequences and their probability of occurrence on a multi-level scale. The supposedly best option is now tried out after planning for concrete implementation in vivo (i.e. in reality) and then evaluated again together with the therapist with regard to the changes and results achieved.

application areas

It is often used in family therapy , in relapse prevention for schizophrenics , and in psychosomatic patients, in general, when it can be seen that a patient's problems and disorders are due to a lack of problem-solving skills.
