History and worship
Christianity in Malta can only be reliably proven from the 4th century. Tradition sees a continuous tradition that goes back to the shipwreck of the Apostle Paul in Malta, who is described in the Acts of the Apostles. It also mentions a Prefect Publius, whose father Paul healed from fever and dysentery ( Acts 28.7 EU ). Another tradition sees Publius as a bishop of Athens who suffered martyrdom under Emperor Trajan in 125.
Three Catholic churches in Malta are dedicated to Saint Publius, who is venerated throughout the island state: Floriana , L-Għarb and Ir-Rabat .
The saint's feast day is January 21st .
