Pulka

Modern pulka

A pulka , also called nansen sledge , is originally a boat-like sled that was used by the Sami . This is pulled by reindeer . It was built from spruce and pine boards. Similar designed sled forms were also built by indigenous peoples of North America. These usually used wood bark. The Akia is used to transport the injured.

From the traditional pulka, a plastic tub weighted down was developed in the 20th century. Today it is also used as a transport sledge on winter trekking tours and is pulled by the hiker himself. Instead of a rope connection, a tensioner (pull rod) is often used. This ensures that the sledge runs in a straight line and enables controlled braking on steep slopes. The sledges used for North and South Pole expeditions often weigh well over 100 kg when loaded.

Dog sleds pulled by one or more sled dogs are also known as Greenland sledges .
