The show aspect is kept rather small in this form of wrestling, while the actions in the ring are more reminiscent of Asian martial arts . In Japan, news from the Puroresu leagues is covered in the daily newspapers in the sports section. In most leagues, the focus is on athletic competition, while in some smaller leagues (similar to the USA) there are so-called hardcore matches in which objects such as barbed wire matches , fluorescent tubes or thumbtacks are used. But such fights tend to be the exception; in the big leagues they hardly appear at all.

The most famous leagues are New Japan Pro Wrestling , Pro Wrestling NOAH , All Japan Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestling ZERO1-MAX (formerly ZERO-ONE), but there are dozens more.
