Pyknocyte

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pycnocytes are shrunken and morphologically changed red blood cells ( erythrocytes ). They are rounded and have cytoplasmic runners. They occur mainly as a result of oxidative stress . They can develop from eccentrocytes through extensive loss of fused membranes. Pycnocytes are smaller than normal red blood cells and stain more strongly due to the compression of the cytoplasm.
