A mercury air pump is a vacuum pump that was invented by Wolfgang Gaede in 1916 . The working principle corresponds to that of a jet pump , but it requires a backing pump . Since it uses toxic mercury as a propellant and the relatively high vapor pressure only allows low final pressures, this design has been almost completely replaced by oil diffusion pumps .
