Quthing (pronunciation :! Uˈtʰiŋ ), also Moyeni , is the capital of the Quthing district in Lesotho . The name Moyeni comes from the Phuthi and means place of the wind .

geography

Quthing is the southernmost city of Lesotho. In 2016 the city had 27,314 inhabitants. Quthing consists of the two districts Upper Moyeni (with the administrative authorities of the district and the hospital) and Lower Moyeni , where the majority of Quthing's residents live.

Population and language

In addition to the Basotho, Quthing is home to numerous Phuthi who belong to a tribe that was not counted as a Basotho people until the 19th century. They speak Phuthi, a Nguni language (Sesotho: Sephuthi ). A “Cultural Sephuthi Day”, organized by UNESCO , took place in Quthing in 2005 to keep the language from being forgotten.

history

The city of Quthing was founded as Moyeni. As the district capital, it had the predecessors Leloaleng and Alwynskop. In 1884 the magistrate was established in Moyeni. It was only with the introduction of postal addresses that the name Quthing caught on. Actually, this is the name of a river and a mission station that are 50 kilometers further south.
