RL Stine
RL Stine (born October 8, 1943 in Columbus , Ohio ; full name Robert Lawrence Stine , former name of the author Jovial Bob Stine ) is an American children's author. To date, around 400 million of his books have been sold, making him one of the most successful writers worldwide. He has received numerous awards and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling children's book series author in 2003.
Life
RL Stine grew up in a Jewish family in his hometown. He started writing little stories at the age of nine after finding a typewriter in his parents' attic.
He later enrolled at Ohio State University and completed his time there with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He has lived in New York City since 1965, taught and edited the humor magazine Bananas for ten years . In 1969 he married his colleague Jane Waldhorn, with whom he wrote several children's books together. Stine wrote and continues to write under the pseudonyms Eric Affabee and Zachary Blue . He lives near Central Park in New York with his wife Jane and son Matthew .
In 1986 Stine began writing horror books for teenagers and children, and three years later he made his breakthrough in the United States with Fear Street . His office was already decorated with a skeleton and some African masks. Of this series about the adventures of young people on a cursed street in the American town of Shadyside, 100 volumes have been published so far. Loewe-Verlag also has numerous translations into German .
His worldwide breakthrough came in 1992 with the horror book series Goose Bumps (GOOSEBUMPS). The series has been translated into around 30 languages and successfully filmed in the United States (shown on Disney XD (Sky) in Germany ). The Goose Bumps book series is also very successful in Germany . It is celebrated worldwide as the most popular children's book series. The American newspaper USA Today identified RL Stine as a popular children's author of all time. He not only makes his readers shudder, but also laugh. Letters to the editor have shown that he had turned children who were previously not interested in books into readers. A not so well known horror series in the United States and Germany by Stine is "Scary Fever". It is very similar in content to the children's book series Goosebumps .
In the United States, the book Haunting Hour - Don't Think About It was adapted for a Universal Studios feature film in 2007 . The series RL Stine's The Haunting Hour has been produced based on his books since 2010 .
In 2014, Stine brought the Fear Street books to life with his novel Party Games ( ISBN 978-1250066220 ). The Fear Street novel Give Me a KILL was published in 2017 ( ISBN 978-1250058966 ). The film adaptation of his goosebumps stories Goosebumps (original title Goosebumps ), in which Stine also played a small role, dates back to 2015 .
Work technique
The author, known as a prolific writer and workaholic , uses a sophisticated working technique to present two novels per month. He draws his own words most of a newspaper article about a curious story , about an " Urban Legend " inspired . Only when he has the title in his head does he begin to write and basically begin with the - astonishing - ending from which he develops the characters and, as it were, "rolls up the story from back to front". On his homepage, the author, who is supposed to share his study with a skeleton and other “creepy” objects, gives insight into his “ writing workshop ” and gives budding young authors tips for their own attempts at writing.
Critical appraisal
Robert Lawrence Stine mixes in his books comprehensible scenarios from the reality of life for children and adolescents with horror and horror effects and a pinch joke and joke, what with the young readers, as surveys show very well received. His mostly paratactic style of language - mainly formulated in main clauses of the colloquial language - is very simply and skillfully adapted to the youth jargon (also in the German translation) without sinking to a low level. Many young people who would otherwise never pick up a book and find even the Harry Potter volumes too demanding find reading through R. L. Stine and in some cases can even improve their reading and writing skills in school. Even educators and librarians , who are more critical of R. L. Stine's work, really appreciate this.
