history

Radio Gong had been broadcasting a program since January 1985, but it could only be heard in the so-called Munich cable pilot project. The first boss of the station was Helmut Markwort . Walter Freiwald , who came from Radio M1 and had previously worked on the microphone at Radio Luxemburg , was the program manager and the first “MorningMan” . Rick Hölzl, Michael “Goofy” Förster , Mike Carl and Andi Wenzel also came from Radio M1 . The numerous moderators were necessary because a moderated 24-hour program was to be organized from the start. A wide range of music was broadcast. During the day there was a mix of pop and rock, in the evening you could hear programs about hard rock and jazz. Local news for Munich and the surrounding area as well as advice and quiz programs rounded off the offer.

On May 24th 1985 the starting shot was fired on the terrestrial frequency 96.3 MHz in Munich on which Gong 96.3 is still broadcasting today. Radio Gong 96.3 is one of the oldest private broadcasters in Germany. The name was henceforth Radio Gong 2000. That was because the station merged with the previously independent provider Radio 2000 at the start on 96.3 MHz. Four daily newspapers were involved in Radio Gong 2000 at that time. These were the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Abendzeitung as well as the Münchner Merkur and the tz . The latter two founded Radio Charivari Munich, today 95.5 Charivari , just a few months later .

In autumn 1985 things were very turbulent for a few weeks on 96.3 MHz. Temporarily yet sent additionally Radio 2Day , Radio Holtzbrinck (Radio for you), the Radio New Europe (now Radio Horeb) and the Bavarian Radio home their programs at this frequency. After 2 months, the transmitters were assigned other frequencies and Radio Gong 2000 was again able to use 96.3 MHz almost alone. Only Radio Holtzbrinck broadcast its “Radio für Sie” 2 hours a day. In 1986 this station was also included in Radio Gong 2000.

Radio Gong 2000 quickly became the market leader in Munich. When Walter Freiwald was replaced by Markus Langemann, the station experienced a renewed increase in popularity. In 1991 there was a major program reform and the "2000" disappeared from the name. The original music concept was gradually abandoned and converted into a hit radio format. Also from 1991 Michael "Bully" Herbig and Rick Kavanian were an integral part of the radio show "Langemann und die Morgencrew", for which they worked both as authors and behind the microphone.

Since then, Radio Gong 96.3 has developed into Munich's most successful private broadcaster among its target group, 14 to 49 year olds. Today the station has the largest market share in Munich. Gong 96.3 broadcasts a current, chart-oriented music program with a focus on rhythmic pop songs. The station offers a full 24-hour program, with the night hours mostly being broadcast without moderation. The gong 96.3 news as well as the gong 96.3 service (weather and traffic) are broadcast every full and half hour. At night and on weekends, the news comes from the content supplier BLR.

The station's best- known program is The Mike Thiel Show with "Morningman" Mike Thiel. This program will be broadcast live Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

In 2015 Radio Gong celebrated its 30th birthday. Gong 96.3 celebrated this in the program with the “30 years in 30 days” campaign. On April 27, Morningman Mike Thiel hosted the opening broadcast for the program and had "Bully" and Rick live in the studio. On July 25th, Gong 96.3 celebrated the anniversary together with its listeners as part of the Midsummer Night's Dream in Munich's Olympiapark.
