Ratih Kumala

Ratih Kumala (* 1980 in Jakarta ) is an Indonesian author .

She studied English literature at the Sebelas Maret University in Surakarta. So far, four novels and a short story collection have been published by her. She also writes scripts for Indonesian television and feature films. Her novel Gadis Kretek (2012) was published by CulturBooks at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 under the German title Das Zigarettenmädchen , translated by Hiltrud Cordes. For the novel, the author has processed part of her own family history in literary terms, as she tells in an interview. Kumala is married to the author Eka Kurniawan. They have a daughter together.
