Realm (computer science)

Realm [ ˈrɛlm ] stands for realm , area , domain . In German it is a technical term used in computer science.

For directory services such as Active Directory , e.g. B. be addressed via LDAP , Realm denotes the entirety of all entries in a directory or names the directory itself. Typically, it is a collection of all human and technical users of a company's IT systems. Often times , the realm is named after the Internet domain of a company or organization, such as DE.WIKIPEDIA.ORG .

Directory services are used, for example, for single sign-on (SSO) architectures. The realm tells the application against which instance of a directory service authentication should take place, i.e. where the user account in question, for which an SSO ticket should be requested, is possibly defined.
