Referendum on the status of the Abyei region

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The referendum on the status of the Abyei region is a delayed referendum in which the residents of the Abyei region could decide whether they want to remain part of the Sudanese state of Janub Kurdufan or join the territory of South Sudan . The vote, which was originally supposed to take place in parallel to the independence referendum in South Sudan between January 9th and 15th, 2011, has been postponed indefinitely due to some disagreements about the voting process.
