René L. Frey

René Leo Frey (born March 9, 1939 in Basel ) is a Swiss economist .

Life

Frey studied economics at the University of Basel and graduated in 1963 with a licentiate. His teachers were Edgar Salin , Gottfried Bombach and Jacques Stohler . In 1964 he received his doctorate in Basel and qualified as a professor in 1969. In 1970, he succeeded the late Jacques Stohler as a full professor of economics at the University of Basel. 1979/80 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History; from October 1, 1996 to September 30, 1998 he was Rector of the University of Basel. In 2004 he retired.

From 1969 to 2014 Frey was - together with his brother Bruno S. Frey - editor and at times co-editor of the economic journal Kyklos . After his retirement he founded the “Center for Research in Economics, Management and the Arts” (CREMA) with Bruno S. Frey, Reiner Eichenberger and Margit Osterloh . His areas of specialization in teaching, research and consulting are theoretical and Swiss economic policy, public finances and spatial economics (regional, urban, environmental and transport economics). In Switzerland he was involved as an expert in the reorientation of financial equalization, regional policy and university funding.

Under the pseudonym Leopold Yerf, René L. Frey writes detective novels with an economic and university background as a hobby.

Frey is married and has three children.
