Resonance production

If two particles are shot at each other in such a way that the center of gravity energy is just right to generate the mass of a new particle (e.g. a meson ), one speaks of resonance production.

All particles that can be generated in this way are unstable. Therefore, because of the uncertainty relation , the required energy does not have to correspond exactly to the particle mass, if a particle only exists for a time , its energy is only determined and it applies . This is particularly important for the Z boson with its short lifespan.
