Retentate (from the Latin retinere = to hold back) is a technical term in membrane technology . The fluid that is retained by the membrane during the separation process is called retentate . The opposite of a retentate is called permeate (from Latin permeabilis ).

In membrane filtration, low-molecular substances and high-molecular substances are separated from one another. The product which penetrates the membrane is referred to as permeate and the product retained as retentate. As an alternative, the word concentrate is also used here . Membrane filtration systems are used, for example, in the food industry and wastewater treatment .
