Rheinallt H. Rowlands , also written Rheinallt H Rowlands , was a band from Llanfairpwllgwyngyll that existed between 1991 and 2001.

history

The band was an idea of Alan Holmes (ex "Ectogram") and consisted of Oz Wright and Dewi Evans and was originally formed around the compilation parody Hen Wlad y Lladd-dai (Land of the Slaughterhouses) with songs by imaginary singers and groups bring out. Evans and Wright - aka "Rheinallt H. Rowlands" - introduced the following backstory:

“On May 17, 1980, the quarry where Rheinallt H. Rowlands had worked for the past thirteen years was closed and all workers were laid off. Driven almost to the brink of suicide, Rheinallt returned one last time to his lonely hut thirteen miles away, sat down in his old wooden chair and ate some soup. Finding the silence unbearable, he turned on his old tube radio and looked for his old house transmitter. He accidentally landed on John Peel on the BBC, Radio 1. Rheinallt, who normally couldn't stand such newfangled nonsense for more than a second, was suddenly deeply touched by the sad voice of a singer coming from the scratchy loudspeaker. When the play ended, Rheinallt learned that the voice was from Ian Curtis or the then popular group Joy Division and that Ian had committed suicide on that very day. This news did not intensify Rheinallt's depression, but rather it inspired him to start a career as a pop singer. The rest, as they say, is history. "

After DJ Nia Melville heard the musicians' album from the Welsh broadcaster BBC Radio Cymru, he invited them to a session on the show "Heno Bydd yr Adar yn Canu". After the success of these recordings, Evans and Wright decided to continue performing under the name "Rheinallt H. Rowlands".

Her first album, "Hendaid Brân a Straeon Eraill" (Great-Grandfather Crow and Other Tales), was only released as a cassette in 1993 on Central Slate records. This recording was re-released in 1998 by "ankstmusik". This was followed by "Bukowski" in 1996. The album received a lot of press coverage and the music has been compared to that of Scott Walker, Ennio Morricone and The Divine Comedy. The Independent voted the album one of the best of the year. The last Rowlands album, "Rheinallt III", was released in 2001 and included a re-recording of their Welsh-language cover version of Joy Division's "New Dawn Fades", Gwawr Newydd Yn Cilio.

A few months after "Rheinallt III" was released, Evans and Wright decided to break up the band. Evans has since focused on his work as a composer and Wright works in his own carpenter's shop.
