Rheinbrech is the local name for the distinctive dividing line between the water of the Alpine Rhine and that of Lake Constance . The term has found its way into the scientific literature.

The incoming, light gray, sediment-rich Rhine water initially only mixes slightly with the warmer, greenish Lake Constance water and, due to its significantly greater density, falls relatively abruptly, following the subsurface relief of the lake. The deep currents depend on the temperature and therefore vary with the seasons.
