from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 'giant quince from Leskovac' , also 'giant quince from Leskowatz' , or 'Leskovac' or 'Leskovacz' for short , is a cultivated variety of quince . The large-fruited apple quince grows quickly and is relatively insensitive to frost, but it is self-sterile .

Variety characteristics

Shrubs of the 'Leskovac' variety grow very quickly, grafting can be fruitful as early as two years. Its leaves are dark green and heavily frosted on the underside. The flowers are large and very decorative. The 'Leskovac' is the only one of the quince varieties widespread in Central Europe that is self-sterile and requires another pollinator variety.

The apple-shaped fruits can be very large and weigh up to 1500 g. Sometimes they are also described as medium-sized. A typical fruit is 10 cm long and 8 cm wide. The skin is yellow with greenish stripes. The pulp is described as white-yellow and the juice as water-white. The 'Leskovac' is particularly recommended for making jelly and jam. It is somewhat susceptible to fruit rot and is not suitable for windy locations.
