Rigolet ( Inuit name: Kikiaq ) is a municipality ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
location
The parish belongs to the Census Division No. 11 . It is located east of Labrador on the eastern tip of a peninsula that stretches between Lake Melville and Double Mer . The settlement is on the west bank of the strait that connects Lake Melville with Groswater Bay and the open sea. Rigolet is the southernmost Inuit settlement. Rigolet has a small airfield ( IATA : YRG). The place is usually reached by plane from Happy Valley-Goose Bay , 160 km west-southwest . There is a ferry service from Goose Bay to Rigolet between mid-June and mid-November.
The 2016 census revealed a population of 305 inhabitants for the municipality. In the 2011 census there were 306. The population is mainly Inuit or of mixed Inuit and European descent.
history
The place was founded in 1735 by the French-Canadian fur trader Louis Fornel as a trading post.
climate
The climate is determined by the Labrador Current. Rigolet is located in the cold temperate climate zone . In the summer months of July and August the average temperature is 16 ° C, in the winter months of January and February it is −18 ° C.
