Robert "Bob" Anthony Lutz (born February 12, 1932 in Zurich ) is an American manager.

biography

Born in Switzerland, Lutz, the son of a banker, emigrated to the USA with his family. He has been a US citizen since 1949. He was a fighter pilot in the US Marines from 1954 to 1959 . He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in production science , and the following year he received a master's degree in business administration with the highest honors from the University of California.

He began his career in the auto industry in 1963 at General Motors , for which he held various management positions in Europe in the following years. He then worked for BMW for three years , where he restructured the portfolio as Head of Marketing and, starting with the BMW 5 and 3 Series, introduced the type structure that is still valid today. In 1974 he moved to Ford in Cologne and became head of Ford Europe. For the past four years he was on the company's Detroit, Michigan board of directors.

Lutz joined the Chrysler Group in 1986 as deputy chairman of the board, and from 1998 to 2001 he was a member of Exide Technologies , the world market leader in lead-acid batteries , including as chairman of the board. In 2001 Lutz returned to the roots of his career, to General Motors, where he remained until 2010.

Bob Lutz is a member of the Advisory Board of the Haas School of Business , University of California at Berkeley.

He is known for his collection of classic automobiles and planes. In his private life he uses, among other things, a decommissioned Alpha Jet (training aircraft and light fighter-bomber of the Bundeswehr).
