from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Ghormley Parr (born September 22, 1921 in Chicago , Illinois - † March 27, 2017 ) was a theoretical chemist who dealt with the ab initio and semiempirical calculation of molecular orbitals and properties.

Life

Robert G. Parr was born the son of a university professor. He went to school in Washington, DC , studied at Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island, USA (degree: magna cum laude , 1942), and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1947 with a thesis in physical chemistry ( force constants of benzene ). From 1947 to 1948 he worked in Minnesota and in 1948 moved to the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, which is now part of Carnegie Mellon University and where he became a professor in 1957. In 1962 he went to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland, and in 1974 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .

In 1956 he became a Sloan Research Fellow and 1960 Fellow of the American Physical Society . Since 1973 he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and since 1982 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2004 he received the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences and in 2009 the American Chemical Society Prize for Theoretical Chemistry.

Merits

Together with Rudolph Pariser , he developed a method to calculate approximate molecular orbitals . This was published in 1953 and is known as the Paris-Parr-Pople or PPP process , since John A. Pople proposed the same approach that same year. He was also the author of books on molecular orbital structures and theories. According to his information, he was the first to use the term "ab initio" calculation in one of his publications.
