Robert M. Knapp

Robert McCarty Knapp (born April 21, 1831 in New York City , †  June 24, 1879 in Jerseyville , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 he twice represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Knapp was the younger brother of Congressman Anthony L. Knapp (1828-1881). In 1839 he came to Jerseyville, Illinois with his parents, where he attended public schools. He then graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute in Frankfort . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1855, he began working in this profession in Jerseyville. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1867 he became a member of the Illinois House of Representatives ; from 1871 to 1876 he served as Mayor of Jerseyville.

In the congressional elections of 1872 , Knapp was elected to the 11th constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Samuel S. Marshall on March 4, 1873 . Since he tried in vain for re-election in 1874, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 . Two years later he was able to regain his seat in Congress and between March 4, 1877 and March 3, 1879, he was able to spend another term in the US House of Representatives. In 1878 he was not re-elected.

After his time in Congress ended, Robert Knapp returned to practice as a lawyer. He died in Jerseyville on June 24, 1879, according to his tombstone.
