Rolling grains
A rolling center , also known as a live center or a rotating lathe tip , is used on lathes as a second bearing for long, flexible turned parts.
The roll center is inserted into the tailstock using a Morse taper . The rotating part must have a centering hole (usually with a taper angle of 60 °) in which the rotating tip of the roller center is held.
There are different versions: The rotary tip can be axially sprung to compensate for linear expansion of the material due to temperature changes during machining. A pointer instrument can also be attached that shows the pressure force (tension force).
