Rolodex

As Rolodex (also Rollkartei , rotary file , portmanteau from English Rol ling and in dex ) an apparatus is known in which a plurality of index cards is mounted on a rotatable axis. It saves time and space when you are looking for an entry. The device was developed by Arnold Neustadter in 1958.

Looking up is made easier by tabs that separate sections of the sorted index cards of the same size as possible. For this purpose, the tabs are labeled with the common prefix of a section.

A paperless equivalent is the Taipudex method of looking up an entry. As with the mechanical model, there is no need to create a copy of an entry in an input field. The initial index is expanded in clear steps until the complete entry is visible at the same time as the assigned information or can be accessed via a link. The following steps are available in a list or table at the touch of a button. The simple mechanical operation of the Rolodex corresponds to the navigation with the arrow keys on the keyboard. Turning corresponds to the vertical selection with the up and down keys, opening a tab of the horizontal navigation with the right key, the left key undoes.
