La Capelette Roma camp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roma camp La Capelette was a meeting place for Roma in Marseille from 2012 to 2013 . The warehouse in the La Capelette district in the 10th arrondissement was the largest Roma gathering place in the city. Around 400 people have lived in the camp since 2012. On October 21, 2013, it was vacated due to a court order.

The court order had given the Roma two months to leave the property. On the day of the evacuation, bulldozers tore down the wooden structures and leveled the area. French human rights activists criticized the authorities' actions. Those affected are now moving to other camps that are already overcrowded. This leads to even more misery among the residents, said human rights activists.
