Ronald D. Asmus

Ronald "Ron" Dietrich Asmus (born June 29, 1957 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , † April 30, 2011 in Brussels ) was an American diplomat and political scientist .

Life

The son of an immigrant family from Germany joined the diplomatic service after attending school and studying , where he was most recently Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe between 1997 and 2000 . During this time he played a leading role in NATO's eastward expansion , in which the former communist states Poland , Hungary , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania joined NATO in 1999 .

He has been honored with several domestic and international awards for his achievements in strengthening transatlantic relations.

After retiring from the diplomatic service, he became an employee of the German Marshall Fund and was most recently Executive Director and Director of Strategic Planning of their office in Brussels . During his work there, which he carried out until his death from cancer , he dealt in particular with the work of the foundation in Asia , Turkey , the Middle East and the South Caucasus .
