A rongeur ( French for 'rodent', 'rodent') - German also hollow chisel pliers - is a surgical instrument for removing tissue . The instrument has one or three resilient joints. The tip is hollowed out or bevelled and has sharp edges. The rongeur is used for everything in orthopedics and neurosurgery to remove bone tissue in hard-to-reach areas. Depending on the design, a distinction is made between rongeurs according to Beyer (DIN 13194), Luer (DIN 13193), Friedmann, Böhler, Ruskin (DIN 13192), Schneidemann, Kerrison and Stille (DIN 13191).
