Roots for Reconciliation ("RfR" or "Roots" for short) is a program of the YMCA Europe which aims to promote peace work. It started in 2007 in the southern Caucasus and has since worked in three different phases, which have been evaluated in between. The main focus is on networking young people and their leaders and promoting peace work through intercultural dialogue. The " Do-No-Harm Approach " is used as the methodology . The internationally oriented work is characteristic; people from more than 30 countries were involved in the RfR programs.

methodology

RfR works with the "Do-No-Harm" approach, which should contribute to the sustainability of the individual projects.

Project phases

RfR works in time-limited phases with clear objectives. The three phases so far are shown below:

2007-2011

In 2007, Roots was founded with the aim of strengthening the YMCA network in the South Caucasus region and building an ecumenical network that works for climate protection, peace and justice.

In the first phase, three leisure areas were built with the aim of enabling international youth encounters there.

  • YMCA Camp Lake Sevan in Armenia (500 m²)
  • YMCA Camp Aramian in Armenia (360 m²)
  • YMCA Camp Orange in Georgia (600 m²)

2012-2015

In the second phase, the program focused on supporting young people in conflict regions. This was done through the training and networking of young leaders in order to act as mentors in their home regions. The Peace Work Institute was founded for this purpose. The three one-week training courses took place in:

  • Istanbul 2012
  • Yerevan 2013
  • Strasbourg 2013

Afterwards, projects of the participants were carried out. This phase was concluded with an evaluation:

  • Budapest 2015

2016-2020 (current phase)

With the help of the previous participants in the RfR project, the next phase was developed, which again serves to further educate and support young people.
